Why Warner credits mental freedom on the field to the birth of his son

Why Warner credits mental freedom on the field to the birth of his son originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Fred Warner is in tears at the start of Week 5 of the 2024 NFL season, and the superstar 49ers linebacker attributes one reason in particular.

In March, Warner and his wife, Sydney, welcomed their first child, Beau Anthony, and becoming a parent transformed the defender’s life and even his style of play on the pitch.

Warner, who is dealing with an ankle injury he suffered in the Week 4 win over the New England Patriots, took the time to explain how his son’s existence correlates to his dominance over San Francisco while speaking to reporters Wednesday.

“I think that’s a big part of it. Having my son, it kind of erases all the gray areas in your life: what’s important, what’s not,” Warner said. “And so you could just have a clear mind, eliminate the distractions, the things that aren’t important (and) don’t serve any purpose in your life. And you can go there and just play for free.

“Daddy Strength” had a positive impact on Warner’s mind and body; his statistics prove it.

Warner recorded 27 tackles, four passes defensed, two interceptions – one being a 45-yard pick-six – and a quarterback hit.

The three-time All-Pro definitely played for free.

Warner predicted that the existence of Beau Anthony would be a game-changer. The father spoke to reporters about his change in mindset in April.

“Yeah, that’s my number 1, well, first marrying my wife, then we have our first baby boy together, that goes above and beyond.” Warner said during the offseason. “Family is priority number one for me, and then football comes second.

“I think now I have even more to play in this match. I already had a lot of motivation, a lot of inner drive, but watching my son every day and knowing that I’m also playing for someone else, it could become quite scary (for opposing players).

Scary indeed. Warner seems to be relentless as always, making every moment in the NFL count.

The 27-year-old is on course to make his seventh campaign one of his best. The Faithful can thank Beau Anthony for that.
