Drake Maye’s first career NFL start in Week 6 against a very good Houston Texans defense was encouragement for the New England Patriotsand chances are his second one will be even better.
The No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft completed 20 of 33 pass attempts for 243 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He made a lot of impressive throws, including his first career TD pass when he hit wide receiver Kayshon Boutte in stride down the right sideline for a 40-yard score just before halftime.
“I thought he showed a lot of composure,” Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said after Sunday’s game. “I thought he went out there and controlled the huddle, took those guys out of the huddle and once again played. That’s really encouraging.”
The Patriots lost 41-21, but inserting Maye into the starting lineup definitely improved a passing attack that ranked among the worst in the league through the first five games.
