Why Draymond disagrees with Mazzulla’s NBA fight proposal originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Draymond Green is not happy with the Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla idea of having more fights in the NBA.
The All-NBA forward explained why fighting all out would be a bad idea during a segment on “Draymond’s green show“.
“One thing I would say to Joe Mazzulla is fight (that’s how) you get (kicked) out of this league,” Green told Baron Davis. “I understand what Joe is trying to say and more than that, what he’s saying is the intensity and the bullshit, the guys getting irritable, we get so much of that out of the game today.
“And so I think that’s what he’s getting at. But as for real physical fights, Joe, I’m here to petition against you because no, we don’t do that. Where this almost got me, I don’t want any of that.
Green’s comments carry a lot of weight and are among the most important in the NBA. physical and confrontational players. After numerous incidents, Green was suspended indefinitely for punching Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkić in the face last season.
Mazzulla expressed interest in spicing up the game with less referee involvement in breaking up fights, similar to professional hockey. The NBA is very strict when it comes to police fighting and has historically imposed huge fines and suspensions on any players who engage in it.
Given the NBA’s growing popularity, it’s a bit of a stretch to suggest that the league is losing entertainment value by not allowing fights to break out and benches to clear.
From Green’s perspective, this makes sense: It’s better for the health of the league to keep players from beating each other for entertainment purposes.
