Andre Onana is once again in the spotlight for his national team during the ongoing CAN 2024. The relationship between the Manchester United goalkeeper and the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation is the subject of discussion.

According to Daily Mail, The feud between Andre Onana and Cameroon FA president, Samuel Eto’o, is still ongoing. The duo have not spoken to each other since the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The feud was the major issue in 2022 that forced Onana to retire from international football.

During the World Cup, Onana was removed from Cameroon’s World Cup squad after being excluded by manager Rigobert Song for disciplinary reasons. The goalkeeper started Cameroon’s first match against Switzerland, but was ruled out for the next two matches in the group stage.

At the time, it was reported that Song wanted a more traditional goalkeeper in place of Onana, leading to a fallout between the two. However, other reports have emerged that the fallout has begun because of a quarrel with Eto’o. The incident prompted Onana to retire from international football in 2023.

Andre Onana returned from retirement in September 2023

The retirement did not last long, with the goalkeeper making an about-face from his earlier decision to rejoin the national team for the AFCON qualifier against Burundi on September 12, 2023. This tie was a must-win match for the African nation. . Onana helped his national team win the draw and qualify for the CAN 2024 in Ivory Coast.

Onana tweeted a photo at the time to announce her return. He said in this statement that he chose to remain true to his ideals in the face of manipulation, lies and abuse of power. The comments were seen as a slight insult to Samuel Eto’o and his actions against the former Inter Milan goalkeeper.

Cameroon on the brink of elimination at CAN 2024

OnanaThe return of to the national team was celebrated by the supporters of the time. However, these celebrations were short-lived due to the goalkeeper’s recent form. Onana’s struggle with his club has been widely documented. However, the bad form has continued with the national team during CAN 2024.

Onana made another mistake in their match against Senegal, which confirmed their defeat against the reigning champions. Cameroon are now on the verge of elimination from the tournament with just one point from two games. The African team needs a victory against Gambia in the final match of the group stage and needs Senegal to beat Guinea to have any chance of advancing to the round of 16 of the tournament.
