THE college football season is well and truly underway as the Week 2 competition begins on Friday.
And in a year when conference reorganization has changed the landscape of college sports, the question of which teams belong to which conference is becoming more important every week. Such is the case in the Big 12, which added four teams from the defunct Pac-12 this season.
This question will certainly be asked throughout Week 2, including Friday night, when Brigham Young University travels to Dallas for a non-conference “Power Four” game against SMU at 7 p.m. ET. CougarsLed by ninth-year coach Kalani Sitake, the team is in its second season as a member of the Big 12 after competing as an independent from 2011-22.

Elsewhere, Baylor will travel to Salt Lake City to face 12th-ranked Utah in Utes“Big 12’s first regular season game.

How many teams are in the Big 12?
The Big 12 Conference currently has 16 members with the addition of four Pac-12 programs this offseason.
The conference had 14 members last season, including Texas and Oklahoma before they left for the SEC in July. With the addition of BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF last season — the first of two waves of programs to join the Big 12 — it was the first time the conference had 10 or more teams since 2012. That year, Texas A&M and Missouri left the Big 12 for the SEC.
Who joined the Big 12 conference in 2024?
On August 2, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah officially joined the Big 12 Conference. All four programs were previously part of the Pac-12 Conference, which began to disband when USC and UCLA (and later Washington and Oregon) decided to leave for the Big Ten Conference.
The decision by the “Four Corner” programs to join the Big 12 was first announced last August.
“We are excited to welcome Arizona, Arizona State and Utah to the Big 12,” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said as much in a statement in 2023. “The conference is home to three premier institutions, both academically and athletically, and the entire Big 12 looks forward to working alongside their presidents, athletic directors, student-athletes and administrators.”
