Dublin Coffman senior Lauren Burkett repeated as Division I District I singles champion, and an Upper Arlington duo outlasted another in the doubles final to cap the district tennis tournament women’s Friday at Columbus Academy.

Burkett defeated Soleil Cordell, second year student at Olentangy Berlin 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the singles final, after sweep Chillicothe senior Bella Flores 6-2, 6-1 in the semi-final. Cordell reached the final with a 6-3, 6-3 victory Dublin Scioto senior Amelia Kunard.

Flores beat Kunard 6-3, 6-2 for third place.

The top four in singles and doubles competed next Thursday and Friday at the College of Wooster. Friday’s competitors earned their state spots during the first day of district play Tuesday.

In the doubles final, UA senior Alice Hawley and sophomore Alexa Roth defeated senior Ava Kramer and junior Dani Ball 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

Both teams advanced to the final with 6-0 and 6-1 victories in the semifinals. Hawley and Roth swept Hilliard Davidson junior Madison Kline and sophomore Mackenzie Kline, and Ball and Kramer swept past New Albany senior Sophia Bojko and junior Reava Desai.

Bojko and Desai beat the Kline sisters 6-3, 7-5 in the third-place match.

Bexley’s Bowles and Columbus Academy doubles team win Division II

Bexley junior and two-time defending singles state champion Amiya Bowles improved to 12-0 this season and 52-0 in her high school career with a third straight district title, but unlike her previous 11 wins this year, it wasn’t a shutout.

Bowles defeated Iva Karagirova, second year student at Columbus School for Girls 6-2, 6-0 in the final.

Karagirova will make her first official appearance.

In Division II, only the district champion and runner-up qualify for state.

Academy senior Tamanna Arya and junior Sophie Wu won the doubles title, defeating CSG juniors Victoria Dizon and Priya Mehta 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
