In case you missed it, we at Pride of Detroit recently had a special guest in for an interview. That’s right-Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing joined Jeremy Reisman and Erik Schlitt for this week’s Midweek Mailbag.
Right off the bat, you can see how Petzing appealed to Lions head coach Dan Campbell. You can clearly tell the intelligence is there. Petzing’s answers were concise and also showed a lot of personality. And looking at it from a fan’s perspective, that should give you a lot of hope for the future of the offense. He spoke at length about how his conception of the offense over the years has always been centered on his personneland what they do best on the pitch. And if you’re Petzing, you must be excited about the talent of his new attack.

“Then the other part of picking plays for three years, you start to figure out why you’re doing things, how to showcase the talent that you have or don’t have,” Petzing said of his vision for the offense. “I think that’s something that I hope people have been able to see throughout my three years there in Arizona. And I hope I get better every game and every year.”
Overall, this was a very good conversation and hopefully gave a lot of insight into Petzing developing the offense in 2026 and beyond. This brings us to the question of the day –
What was your favorite part of Petzing’s interview with Pride of Detroit?
My response: I agree with Petzing’s comments on Lions running back David Montgomery. Since the season ended, there has been speculation as to whether Montgomery would return for the 2026 season. However, if you ask Petzing whether or not he wants the veteran back in the building for the upcoming season, I think the answer is pretty clear.

“He wanted to assure me, let me know that he wanted me to be a part of it,” Montgomery told Chris Simms in a recent interview. “Yeah, I can’t wait to see what happens next and see what happens now.”
During the interview, Petzing didn’t go into depth about the conversations he had with Montgomery, but it’s obvious he wants him to be with us this year.
“I said, ‘Hey, I’m excited to work with you. I can’t wait to welcome you to the building,’ and that’s where I’m going to leave it,” Petzing said.
