Kansas was in danger of falling to 1-3 in Big 12 play Tuesday night as it takes on undefeated Iowa State. Darryn Peterson had a fantastic game in the 84-63 win over Iowa State. Peterson suffered from cramps throughout the season and had been a topic of conversation. The subject of his cramps came up again after the victory against Iowa State.
“I feel better. It’s slowly coming back to me. I’ve been out for a while but every game gets better. It was a great win, especially after the loss to West Virginia. We knew we had to come out and win,” Peterson said after the match regarding his statusaccording to ESPN.
Peterson missed time earlier this season and missed another game in December with a hamstring issue. He also missed some games due to cramps this year as well. Still, he’s been playing more minutes lately and his coach is excited about Peterson’s play and performance against Iowa State.
“It’s more what I envisioned,” head coach Bill Self said. “We have an elite player – we have an elite scorer – and even tonight, when (Peterson) went for his, he can do things that other guys can’t do. But the fact is, the other guys are good players. We don’t need to rely on him. I don’t know if we’ve found that balance yet. But tonight was the closest thing.”
Peterson played 27 minutes in the game against Iowa State. He scored 16 points while adding five rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals in the victory. Kansas opened the game with an 11-3 run and increased the lead to 31-14 after just seven minutes of play. They held a double-digit lead for almost the entire game.
Kansas is now 12-5 this seasonbut just 2-2 in Big 12 play. They hit the ground again Friday night, hosting Baylor.
