Brian Kelly, LSU head coach met the media Monday and discussed LSU’s next opponent: Vanderbilt.
The Tigers are coming off three straight losses and are hoping to take advantage of back-to-back home games to finish the season on a high note.
Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea is a former Kelly assistant, having worked on the Notre Dame staff.
“It’s a physical, tough defense,” Kelly said. “They play it in a way to cut down on points, and I think defensively they do a really good job of balancing against the run and against the pass.”
Kelly spoke about Commodores offensive, highlighting quarterback Diego Pavia.
“Obviously the offensive structure has changed. Diego Pavia leads his team in rushing, with a 60% completion percentage. He’s a tough, uncompromising player and he’s the one who makes that happen. comes true for them,” Kelly said.
Kelly said he was also impressed with the offensive line and special teams.
LSU has struggled to stop running QBs and option football this year and the Tigers will be tested again on Saturday.
“You have to defend the running game,” Kelly said. “It’s really a triple option in many ways.”
Kelly compared it to his time playing Navy at Notre Dame. LSU saw an attack option last year when it hosted Army, winning that game 62-0.
This game is tougher than it was when it first appeared on LSU’s schedule. Vanderbilt is having a breakout year under Lea. The Commodores opened the season with a victory over Virginia Tech and took it into SEC play, upsetting Alabama and beating Auburn on the road.
