The professional women’s basketball league will hold its first game in Canada on May 13

Each week, CBC Kids News takes an in-depth look at a story that’s making headlines. Click the video above or below to see this week’s KN Explains.

For the first time, the National Women’s Basketball Association is organizing a game in Canada.

The preseason game will take place in Toronto, Ontario on May 13 between the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx women’s teams.

Although Toronto has the Raptors in the NBA, there are no Canadian teams in the WNBA.

So why Canada and why now?

Kids News spoke with Leah MacNab, Executive Director of NBA Canada.

“It seemed like the next natural progression for (basketball) fans to be able to experience women’s soccer,” MacNab said.

She hopes to continue developing the WNBA and NBA in Canada.

Online WNBA fans are sharing their hope that Canada can have its own WNBA team.

“When you have a team representing a country, you will see how loyal, honored and proud the fans will be to support and support them 1,000 percent,” Instagram user @kay_mlp23 wrote on a post of the WNBA on the Toronto. game.

“That’s why the WNBA needs a team in Toronto or Canada.”

But could a city in Canada support a WNBA team? And what are the WNBA’s actual expansion plans?

KN contributor Abigail Dove takes a look at what a city needs to get a professional sports team franchise and which cities might fit the bill.
