In what was a historic and record-breaking WNBA season, A’Ja Wilson surpassed them all.
With a free throw just before halftime, Wilson scored his 941st point of the season, surpassing Jewell Loyd for the WNBA’s single-season points record (a record set by Loyd last year).
In a season where interest in the WNBA is booming, Wilson has proven she is simply the best player on the planet. And it’s not particularly close.
Wilson, en route to a third WNBA MVP award and becoming the first player to score more than 1,000 points in a season, entered the game leading the WNBA in scoring, with 27.3 points per game, and is second in rebounding (at Angel Reese) with 11.9 rebounds per game. She led the Las Vegas Aces to back-to-back WNBA titles and was voted the 2023 WNBA Finals MVP. She also scored the fourth-most points in the WNBA regular season last year.
There’s a reason why, heading into Wednesday night’s game, Fever’s star recruit Caitlin Clark called Wilson “indefensible.”
Midway through that season, Wilson flew to the Paris Olympics and was Team USA’s best player, leading the team in scoring (18.7 points per game) and rebounding (10.2 per game) as they won another gold medal.
Wilson is at the top of her game right now, and it’s time for us to start talking about her in the same breath as Diana TaurasiTamika Catchings, Maya Moore, Cynthia Cooper and the rest of the greatest players this game has ever known. She deserves it.
