Texas A&M (13-4, 3-1 SEC) is ahead of schedule amid head coach Bucky McMillan first season at the helm, going 3-0 in SEC play before falling to No. 24 Tennessee on the road 87-82 in double overtime Tuesday evening. In a game where the Aggies struggled from the free throw line (21-32) while being outscored 60-35, including 24 offensive rebounds that led to 20+ points.

Having to play small ball due to Indiana forward Mackenzie Mgbako’s season-ending injury, the rebounding issues will likely continue, but the tape’s improvement will determine a handful of close games ahead, especially if the Aggies continue to hit 10 or more 3-pointers per game after draining 13 against the Volunteers.

Even after losing to Tennessee, Texas A&M surprisingly pink in ESPN’s Bracketology update on one of the “Last Four Byes,” as pundit Joe Lunardi was likely impressed with how the Aggies continued to fight with a chance to pull off another road upset in one of the toughest environments in SEC play.

Still, the Aggies need to rack up wins and more wins in Quad 1 to have a legitimate chance to make the NCAA Tournament, but depending USA TODAY Sports’ March Madness bracket update, writers Erick Smith, Eddie Timanus and Paul Myerberg predict Texas A&M will be in 10th place in a rematch against 7th seed SMU, believing the Aggies will finish the 2026 regular season with a strong enough resume to earn a spot on the field.

It’s still too early to know how the rest of the season will play out, but after almost beating Tennessee, many, including myself, believe this team can compete with any team in the country.

Texas A&M will now travel to Austin to face Texas on Saturday afternoon.
