Tyler Reddick believes NASCAR isn’t what it was in its heyday, but still in ‘really good place’

NASCAR, at its peak, was one of the most watched sports in the United States. Its popularity and public appeal was second only to that of the NFL, and it boasted some of the country’s most admired superstars. Although this crescendo is a far cry from what it once was, 23XI Racing driver Tyler Reddick believes the sport is back on track to regain its status.

In a recent interview with CNBC Television, he was asked if NASCAR was on the precipice of a new wave of growth. He replied, “I think we’re in a really good place. Honestly, we haven’t reached the heights we were years and years ago, but I feel like it’s going in the right direction. We went for this Next Gen car, as it’s been called over the years. It was a really big deal for this car to be successful.”

He went on to say that the new seventh generation car has indeed been successful in many ways. But improvements are still possible. He also appreciated NASCAR for listening to drivers and teams in its efforts to improve the car. Goodyear’s work in recent years has also reinforced Reddick’s belief that the sport is moving in the right direction.

Tires have become an integral part of motor racing. Each type of track requires a different type of compound, and Goodyear has done an excellent job of research and development, creating tires that promote sag and, therefore, more racing action. He said, “You know, I would say for us, the tire really makes a huge difference right now to the type of racing that we put on at the track. So I think we’re in that situation.”

He admitted he doesn’t know if the sport will explode as spectacularly as it did decades ago, but he believes the direction it’s headed is the right one. NASCAR’s new short track package should be a factor in his optimism. After several rounds of trials and tribulations, NASCARand Goodyear seem to have found the right formula for making racing interesting, with another example coming soon at Darlington.

This involves excellent soft tires from Goodyear, additional power under the hood and a simplified diffuser that improves the aerodynamics of the Next Gen car. The first short track race of the season, at Phoenix, used this package and produced good results.

The second test will take place at Darlington Raceway this weekend, with the added dangers of cars having no diffuser. Hopefully it will hold there too. Even though it is just a small step, it is still crucial towards the ultimate goal.
