In recent years, the NFL and politics have become increasingly intertwined, with players speaking out on global issues. Like it or not, politics is a part of sports, and the NFL and its stars are no exception. As the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches and social media becomes more accessible, athletes are not shying away from sharing their thoughts and opinions with the public, regardless of the potential political consequences.

NFL long snapper Blake Ferguson takes on White House social media
On Wednesday, the official White House Twitter account posted a graphic calling for an assault weapons ban, much to the dismay of Miami Dolphins long-snapper Blake Ferguson. The special teams player reposted the tweet, saying, “Putting assault weapons only in the hands of the feds you currently arm? Yeah, kick them.”

Ferguson is likely expressing his displeasure with the White House’s attempt to restrict American citizens’ gun rights, while also potentially believing that any regulation and restriction of assault weapons could lead to a police or military state. Ferguson has never shied away from sharing his political views on Twitter, retweeting vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance earlier this week. He has also voiced his displeasure with the president Joe Biden on several occasions since June of this year. Most recently, Ferguson publicly refuted the idea that Donald J. Trump supporters had switched allegiances to new Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
