Tottenham Hotspur squandered a 2-0 lead as they lost to Brighton & Hove Albion 3-2 on Sunday.
Their disappointing Premier League result ended their five-match winning streak in all competitions, while pushing them to ninth place in the Championship. The first strikes of Brennan Johnson and James Maddison gave Spurs a convincing lead before half-time, but three second-half Brighton goals secured their victory at the Amex.
But who is responsible for Spurs’ sudden downfall? Here are Tottenham’s best and worst players in the loss according to 90 minutes player ratings.
Brennan Johnson-7/10
Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the 23rd minute by placing a fine assist from Dominic Solanke into the back of the net. The 23-year-old dominated the first half of the match, moving confidently around the pitch and seeing numerous chances in front of goal.
The second half proved much more difficult for Johnson, who struggled to gain momentum as his team faced attacks from Brighton. His contributions, however, saw him score in six consecutive games for Spurs, becoming the first player to achieve this distinction since Harry Kane in 2019.
Honorable mention
Dominique Solanke – 7/10
Tottenham summer signing Dominic Solanke was unlucky not to score a goal on Sunday, but his efforts on the pitch certainly did not go unnoticed.
The striker was at the heart of all of Spurs’ attacking play, sending powerful balls up the pitch to help his teammates earn their place on the scoresheet. His assist for Johnson’s opener was perfectly timed and well-positioned, allowing the Welsh star to score with ease.
He had a good start to life in North London and even received his first England team call-up in seven years to reflect his efforts.
Destiny Udogie – 4/10
Destiny Udogie was arguably responsible for all of Brighton’s goals in the second half and struggled to make a positive impression on Sunday.
His poor effort in trying to clear the ball led directly to Yankuba Minteh’s strike just after the break and his weakness at the back highlighted a problem area for the Spurs defense.
He was clearly frustrated on the pitch and later received a warning when his feelings boiled over. Udogie simply couldn’t get things going against Brighton and his mistakes proved costly for his team.
Pedro Porro – 5/10
Pedro Porro really struggled to cope with Danny Welbeck and Yankuba Minteh in the Brighton attack as they ran riot in the second 45 minutes.
While the Spurs defense as a whole raised questions, Porro in particular seemed to be having a bad day and his efforts on defense just weren’t enough. He had moments of quality in attack, making some solid passes to his teammates, but in his right-back role Porro failed.
It was a difficult afternoon for the Spanish star, who was unable to take command of the Tottenham defense.
