Today is January 6, 2025. And on this date in Texas history, Charlie Strong was officially introduced as the 29th head coach in the history of the school’s football program.
After the 2013 season, Strong was named to replace longtime Texas coach Mack Brown. Texas lured Strong away from Louisville after he compiled a 37-15 record over four seasons with the Cardinals.
Strong was the first black head coach of the Texas football team.
“It’s going to be a fun ride and I can’t wait to get started,” Strong said during an introductory press conference which he attended with then-UT athletic director Steve Patterson and former Texas president Bill Powers. “I’m extremely happy and very proud to be the head coach at the University of Texas. Let’s hang in there.”
Strong never managed to find much success in Texas. After going 16-21 with the Longhorns from 2014 to 2016, Strong was fired.
