JASPER — The Barr-Reeve Vikings earned their 20th victory Tuesday in the regional tennis opener at the Ed Yarbrough Tennis Center in Jasper.
The Barr-Reeve tennis team qualified for the regional championship by beating Sullivan 5-0 to improve to 20-1 on the season and will now face Jasper, who beat Lincoln 5-0.
The Vikings’ 5-0 sweep began with BR’s Xavier Meiring beating Sullivan’s Levi Chickadance, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, while Daniel Underwood defeated Hunter Pinkston 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Kierson Lengacher beat Andrew Jackson 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3.
In No. 1 doubles, BR’s Levi Lester and Isaac Madison beat Carter Mischler and Jayden Scott, 6-2, 6-3. In the second slot, Kyle Graber and Brody Swartzentruber beat Sam Couch and Spencer Hanks, 6-3, 6-4.
“I was pleased with the way our singles players gained momentum from the start and never let it go. Doubles Nos. 1 and 2 were on a mission and played very good doubles against two strong opponents. quality I’m proud of the way our guys played against a good matchup “Sullivan’s team coached Wednesday night will be a very difficult task, but we’re excited about the challenge and opportunity that awaits us,” a. said BR coach Brock Higgins.
Meredith fails
Washington’s No. 1 tennis player, Josh Meredith, competed Tuesday in the singles section in Jasper against Elijah Brosmer of Forest Parks and lost 0-6, 3-6.
The singles section allows a No. 1 singles or No. 1 doubles team to advance until defeated and Meredith advanced from the Lincoln Section last week.
“This wasn’t the way we wanted to end the season. However, as a freshman, Josh has gained quite a bit of experience as a number one singles player. I know he will get the job done and will continue to improve throughout his high school careers,” said WHS coach Jason Johnston.
