The U.S. men’s soccer team will display the rainbow crest during parts of the World Cup in Qatar

Since qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar, every team that has made it to the tournament has faced the same question: how – and when – could they address human rights concerns within the Gulf State?

On Monday, the U.S. men’s national team began giving its answer by unveiling a rainbow crest that the team will use to promote its campaign for inclusiveness. The team said it would not wear the patch on the field, but planned to display it in areas controlled by U.S. Soccer in Qatar, such as at fan celebrations. Photos of the crest show that the stripes, which are all typically red, are multi-colored.
