Sports betting and gaming is going through a period of change in the UK and beyond.. As football continues to grow across the world, many betting companies are joining in and attaching their colors to their flagpole, finding effortlessly promoting their businesses in an environment that actively and passively promotes gambling for fans and players worldwide.

AS USA spoke to Billy Lumsden, head of marketing at betting company SkyBet., based in the United Kingdom. Lumsden was a former gambling addict and has now been sober for several months. He has a unique preview both about the dangers of gambling and how one can overcome the addiction process and move away from the problem.

“It’s so ingrained in everyday life,” Billy beginswho started playing at age 16,”you can’t go 5 or 10 meters without seeing an advertisement, which says it all.” The social pressure in the United Kingdom, where betting and sport are inextricably linked, is enormous: “if someone talked about a bet, we wanted to do it for fear of missing the opportunity.

Going to football matches in England is an extremely social event, where millions of young adults – mostly men – come together to carry on a routine that may have been passed down from generation to generation. “It’s almost a nice social (experience), which is why a lot of people still do it now. I know a lot of people who do it all year round, most of the time it’s the social element.

Supporters are not the only ones to be victims of the omnipresence of games of chance in football. Ivan Toney and Lucas Paquetá are just two of many high-profile cases in which professional footballers have been caught betting on a match. Toney, who “started gambling at the age of 15” and was recently convicted of more than 200 betting violations.which is not allowed for footballers, plays for Brentford in the Premier League.

The club, which is considered a humble and family team in a world of emotionless, ruthless and pragmatic teams, released his new jersey with sponsor Hollywood Bets just months after his indictment. Before that, the club released a statement saying they would “do everything possible to support Ivan”. The hypocrisy shown here highlights the need for money as well as the opportunism of the betting company. know and enjoy a perfect situation, because betting and football have gone hand in hand for decades.

NOW, almost 50% of Premier League teams have a playing sponsor on the front of their shirt, many of which are East Asian betting companies that cannot be accessed from the UK. However, given the Premier League’s global audience and the huge fees companies are willing to pay to have their name featured every week by the world’s best playersas well as various promotional videos and photos, businesses can see the benefits of having 11 global stars as walking advertisements for their site.

As for Lumsden’s inspiring recovery processhe spoke to a therapist provided by work, Liz Carter MBE, saying it was “a clear path to follow”. He told AS that fans are called by betting companies if their activity patterns appear to be becoming potentially problematic. for their economic situation or health, or if they deteriorate radically, with specific departments of the betting companies being responsible for monitoring and caring for their players.

When it comes to the nature of the relationship between football and gambling, things look set to change: Premier League set to introduce league-wide ban on gambling sponsors on their shirtssomething Lumsden calls “the million dollar question” of whether it will work or not: “they reach a level where it’s no longer completely in your face when you’re watching the game“. He calls the move “a good step for the future” and adds that “a very large number of companies are doing the right thing and taking the necessary steps.”
