The October 2023 issue of Golf course architecture is out now.
The redesigned and renamed Jameson Golf Links at the Portmarnock Resort near Dublin, Ireland, is on the cover of the new issue of Golf course architecture. The works, supervised by Jeff Lynch of (re)GOLF, included the rerouting of several holes, including those located in the dunes near the Irish Sea.
As golf experiences participation numbers not seen in decades, we wonder if this translates into a boom for golf architectsFor our main article, which includes ideas from golf course architects Phil Smith, Adrian Stiff, Christian Lundin, Jeremy Slessor, Bill Coore, Kurt Bowman, Dana Fry and Rob Collins.
Adam Lawrence visited Pinehurst in North Carolina for a view under construction of the tenth Tom Doak-designed course at the resort. He considers the eighth “one of the most daring holes I’ve ever seen” – in part because of its imposing “Matterhorn” feature in the direct line of play.
Adam also spent time Foxhills club in Surrey, England, which invests heavily in its courses, with the design expertise of Gary Johnston of European Golf Design.
Also in this issue, we speak with Cynthia Dye McGarey about Erbil Hills – Iraq’s only golf course – preparing to open its first nine holes. Cynthia talks about her experience working in the city of Erbil and the importance of this project for Iraq.
We report on the reconstruction of the greens at Aloha Golf Club in Marbella, Spain; The new one from Nicklaus Design National Panther classes in South Florida; Jerry Pate’s next ‘facelift’ to dog teeth in the Dominican Republic; the renovation of the Monster golf course in New York by Rees Jones and Bryce Swanson; and the carefully budgeted work of Dan Hixson at Bend Golf Club in Oregon.
Elsewhere we hear Ron Forse, which explores the intersection, in reality and in language, between golf and war; And Brandon Johnsonwhich highlights the need for interesting and strategic golf course design rather than focusing on creating extremely difficult or overly long holes.
Our Tee Box sections include news from OCM’s redesign of Third course at Medinah Country Club near Chicago, and an overview of the route of the new Cabot Highlands course which is expected to open in preview in 2024. We speak with Alem Hussein, the only golf course designer born in Guyana, on the 10 golf courses he plans to build in the South American country; and we take stock of the renovation which has just started at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, before hosting the Open Championship 2026. There are many others too.
We hope you enjoy reading!
