The July 2023 issue of Golf course architecture is out now.
THE Dunas route in Terras da Comporta in Portugal, photographed by James Hogg, is on the cover of the new issue of Golf course architecture. The official opening in October will complete the project’s long journey since architect David McLay Kidd’s first visit in 2008. And on opening day, “Portugal will have a new number one golf course,” says Adam Lawrence, editor-in-chief of GCA.
We also examine the theme of green gears. Are the days of sharply contoured greens numbered, given how unplayable they are becoming as clubs and their members demand faster surfaces? We benefit from the ideas of Kurt Bowman, Stuart Rennie, Jason Straka, Connor Lewis, Jerry Lemons, Jim Nagle, Rob Collins and Craig Haltom.
Tom Mackin speaks with Cabell Robinson on his career in Spain, where he has lived for more than half a century. He gives a great overview of his work for Robert Trent Jones, his portfolio in the Mediterranean and his Finca Cortesin course, which is hosting this year’s Solheim Cup.
You may notice some changes in GCA in this issue (the first of our fifth series of 18), including the introduction of a new Reports section. Here you can discover the projects of St. George’s Hill in England, the new WAC Golf route for The ranch in Florida, the overhaul of European Golf Design The Great Mare on Guernsey, the 21 holes of Mike Nuzzo for Cabot Citrus Farms, The Rees Jones renovation work in Japan, and the Golfplan bunker project in Seowon Hills in South Korea.
Elsewhere, Renaissance Golf Design’s Eric Iverson explains how the company discovered elements that make Cherry Hills Mark Wagner, a Gilded Age treasure and golf historian, highlights the importance of inclusion and sustainability for the Native American tribe that owns Firefighters Golf Course in Kansas.
Our Tee Box sections include news of the bunker overhaul that Clayton, DeVries & Pont oversaw at Royal Dublin in Ireland and we are examining the route of the new King-Collins red feather classes in Texas. We speak with the CMOs Mike Cocking about The Furrows, a new short course that has opened in Kingston Heath in Australia and we hear from Henrik Stenson and Christian Lundin about their new Crownwood Club on the west coast of Sweden. There are many others too.
We hope you enjoy reading!
