*Says: “If Akinboro thinks he can become NBA president by making blatantly corrupt orders, he is wrong”

A former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, CGoF, has criticized an ex parte court order barring the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) from recognizing any presidential candidate other than the so-called Egbe consensus candidate Amofin O’odua.

In a post on

Odinkalu said Justice Yemi Saubana Adekunle of the Oyo State High Court, who he said was appointed in December 2024, effectively concluded the voting for the 2026 NBA elections and announced the result through an ex parte order.

“Yemi Saubana Adekunle, who became a judge of the Oyo State High Court, I believe, in December 2024, concluded the voting for #NBADecides2026 and announced the result,” Odinkalu wrote.

He criticized the judge for restricting the NBA’s voting membership without giving them a chance to be heard.

“By ruling ex parte on a nomination filed by the incorporated directors of Egbe Amofin two weeks ago, he prevented the entire world, including all voting members of @NigBarAssoc that he did not want to hear from, from recognizing any candidate for the presidency of @NigBarAssoc in 2026, except the ‘consensus’ candidate of #EgbeAmofin,” Odinkalu said.

Odinkalu also questioned Akinboro’s strategy to become NBA president.

“I don’t know how @MuyiwaAkinboro thinks this is the way to win the NBA presidency. If he wants to emerge by consensus, all he has to do is persuade the other candidates in the running to step aside for him,” he said.

Terming the court’s orders as “blatantly corrupt”, the former NHRC chairman also criticized the judge’s competence.

“But if he thinks he can become NBA president by fabricating these blatantly corrupt orders from a noble or neophyte judge who doesn’t know how to distinguish between ‘save’ and ‘safe,’ he is wrong,” Odinkalu said.

The declaration follows an ex parte interim injunction granted by the Oyo State High Court, sitting in the Ibadan Judicial Division, restraining the NBA, its officers, organs, committees, agents, servants, firms and any person acting for or on their behalf from recognizing, accepting or processing the nomination of any candidate other than the consensus candidate presented by the Incorporated Administrators of Egbe Amofin O’odua for the 2026 NBA presidential election. election.

The order, issued in Suit No. I/205/2026, Court No. 17, was signed by Hon. Justice YS Adekunle on February 24, 2026, following an ex parte application filed by the applicant.

The matter was adjourned to March 10, 2026 for the hearing of the application on notice of an interlocutory injunction.
