The game was far from the Patriots’ biggest problem in the loss to the Colts originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
Part of the fun of going through these Patriots games, win or lose, is that everyone has their own take on why things turned out the way they did.
But after the Patriots’ 25-24 loss to the Colts on Sundayconsuming other people’s catches made me feel like someone had stuffed the wrong kind of mushrooms in my leftover Thanksgiving casserole.
Not because of what happened on the field. We’ve seen this before. Self-inflicted mistakes. Coaching challenges. Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.
This is all very normal for these Patriots.
What was weird was that instead of focusing on the main issues that caused the Patriots to lose this game, my good friend Tom E. Curran told me Patriots Discussion that play call was item No. 1 on his list of postgame complaints.
Pass the snizzberries. Strange journey ahead.

Two campaigns were the center of attention. One at the end of the half. (Run. Run. Pass.) One after a Christian Gonzalez interception in the fourth. (Run. Run. Pass.) It was the kind of football conservatism that causes eye rolls in real time, especially on Sunday with quarterback Drake Maye behaving like a seasoned veteran.
I also found these stretches to be completely uninspiring. Even though the Patriots rushed for over 6.0 yards per carry in this one. Put it on the hypothesis board. Without a doubt.
But for a lack of aggressiveness to be the primary issue for some — no It wasn’t just Curran here locally! – is described as a mind-blowing circumcision of mosquitoes.
The Patriots easily could have scored 42 points in this game without a single play change.
They lost seven points on a dropped touchdown by Hunter Henry who was picked off. They lost four points after being called for back-to-back holding penalties, which turned a first-and-goal at the 2-yard line into a first-and-goal at the 22. They lost three on a chip field -shot. goal missed by Joey Slye. They lost four more when Kendrick Bourne admitted he had a bad journey near the goal line and blocked Maye’s view of Henry.
If you want to put somewhere on the list that this game was lost because Jerod Mayo didn’t trust his quarterback enough and tiptoed his way through two key moments, go for it . But it has to be lower on the list.
This game was lost because the Patriots, once again, I couldn’t follow the right routes Or execute the correct blocks. They lost because once again they couldn’t play without penalty. They lost because, once again, they were crushed defensively in key places. They lost because once again they failed to master the mundane.
Do these things and they will win. Go away.
It may have become monotonous for people to see the same problems week after week and point to them as the reasons why the Patriots don’t have a better record.
But it’s the boring stuff that kills them.
