Football is the most popular sport in the world. More than 4 billion people are fans, more than half of the world’s population. It is a very demanding sport in terms of expectations, physique, endurance, intelligence, creativity and technical skills.

Throughout the history of football, we have seen many legendary players and clubs achieve things that no other has. Each generation had a player who stood out. The most popular comparison these days, for example, is that between Messi and Ronaldo. The debate over who is better is so vast that almost all online bookmakers such as Bet online has an open sports bet as to who will have the most success and end their career.

Since we have many debates in the world of football, we would like to share some of the most popular ones. These debates are always open and there are valid arguments on both sides, which is why neither side can prevail. Let’s check them.

Pelé against Maradona

The debate that got older generations fighting. These two did not play in the same period but Maradona arrived just after Pelé retired. Pele was the best scorer in history and people thought no other player would be able to reach his height, but Maradona proved them wrong. Maradona’s professional career began in 1976, just a year before Pelé’s retirement.

To make things even more spicy, the rivalry between these two was even greater because Pele is Brazilian and Maradona is Argentinian. The two countries have a historic feud in the world of football. To this day, people are still divided as to which player was better.

Football or Anti-Football

One of the biggest debates in modern football when it comes to playing style. Many clubs like Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have integrated an attacking style of play, with lots of passing and high pressing. On the other hand, many clubs are willing to “park the bus” in front of their goal and simply play defense.

Even though the anti-football tactic has proven to yield great results, it is often criticized for making games boring to watch. Mourinho is the greatest expert on this tactic and, although his style of play is not very fun, he has managed to become one of the most decorated managers in football history.

Referees or technology

When VAR was introduced to the world, fans were divided as many thought it would spoil the fun. Since its introduction, many goals have been disallowed after the team celebrated. This caused some emotion in the public. They said they support fair play, but the beauty of the sport is that sometimes mistakes are made and they have to live with them. On the other hand, people believe that VAR is useful in the war against corruption and match-fixing.

Messi vs. Ronaldo

Finally, we have the biggest football debate of the modern era. Messi and Ronaldo have broken records and won prizes we never thought we could win. Both players are divine, each with their own strengths. Everything about their style of play is opposite, which is why there are many debates about who is better. One thing is for sure though, we are lucky to live in a time where we can see these two rewrite history.
