The addition of Orphey comes after Gideon’s departure last week to become the defensive coordinator of Georgia Tech.
Originally from Houston, Orphey has been coach of Rutgers corner since 2022, with previous stops at Alabama, Utah State, Montana State and South Carolina. He began his coach career in 2011 as a corner trainer in Texas Southern.
Under the advice of Orphey, Rutgers ranked 87th in the country in defense of pass last season. However, in 2023, the Scarlet Knights owned a Top 10 defense, helping the program to obtain its first winning season since 2014.
