Tanner Jeannot suspended three games for Thursday head shot

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced Friday that Kings forward Tanner Jeannot will be suspended for three games. The Los Angeles forward was assessed a match penalty for an illegal check on the head of Vancouver’s Brock Boeser on Thursday night.

Under the current collective agreement, Jeannot will lose $41,640.63 depending on his cap reached. This amount will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Despite his abrasive playing style, this is the first suspension of Jeannot’s career. Three games might seem like a lot for a first-time offender, but given the violent and predatory nature of the move, coupled with Boeser’s injury, it’s unlikely anyone on the Los Angeles side was stunned by the decision.

With Alex Turcotte nursing an injury, Jeannot’s suspension likely presents an opportunity for a forward to be recalled from Ontario’s reign. Samuel Fagemo, who has 6 points in his last two games, is the first name that will come to mind for many. However, there are indications that the player brought up to the big team will be Samuel Helenius.

Expect Sammy Helenius to be called up by the LA Kings (and good for him!).

But this disrupts tonight’s plans…

Helenius will likely make his NHL debut Saturday night when the Kings host the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 6′ 6″, 21-year-old center has 2 goals and 1 assist in 8 games with the Reign.
