South bend, ind. (AP) – Tae Davis scored 21 points, Markus Burton added 20 and Notre Dame beat Pittsburgh 76-72 on Saturday.
None of the two teams led by more than five points in the first 33 minutes and the score was tied at 54 with seven minutes to do in the second period. Burton scored seven points and Davis added four in an 11-2 race which gave Notre Dame an advance of 65-56 with about four minutes to play. The Fighting Irish have made seven of their last nine shots, but only managed one blow in the last two minutes, committing two reversals and making several trips on the Franc launches line.
Pitt arrived at 74-72 with eight seconds to play, but Jr Konieczny made the last two of the eight of Notre Dame’s eight francs in the last 37 seconds to close the victory.
Cameron Corhen scored 12 of the first 21 points of Pittsburgh in the first half and the Panthers led by two with 7 1/2 minutes to play. Neither of the two teams led the rest of the half-time by more than three points and the score was equal to 30 at halftime.
Cole Cert scored 12 points and was the only player to score for Notre Dame in a 3,10 -minute section in the middle of the second half. Konieczny added 10 points. Davis made 8 of the 11 shots.
Ishmael Leggett had 21 points, Corhen 20, Jaland Lowe 13 and Guillermo Diaz Graham 11 for the Panthers (16-11, 7-9 ACC).
Notre Dame (12-15, 6-10) has a sequence of five home victories in the series, dating from the last victory of Pitt 86-82 on January 9, 2016.
Pittsburgh welcomes Georgia Tech on Tuesday.
