IGA Swiatek overcome an Elise Mertens determined to ensure a 7-6 victory (7/2), 6-1 and to take her place in the last 16 in a WTA 1000 tournament for a record event of 25th consecutive.
Swiatek, second seeded, has not lost before the last 16 at this level since Cincinnati 2021.
The post was 5-2 in the first set, but Mertens retaliated to do so 5-5 before Swiatek could regain his domination during the equality break.
Swiatek did not look back from that moment when she was doing a short job of the second set and she admitted that she had struggled on her service. Its first percentage of service increased from 60% to 79% in the second set.
“In the first set, my service did not work perfectly. I am happy to be patient enough to work for it, and in the second set, I felt much better,” said Swiatek.
Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the 22nd seeded, overcome the 15th seeded Karolina Muchova to go to the fourth round with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory.
In the male draw, Grigor Dimitrov in Bulgaria fought with a 6-7 victory (7/3), 6-4, 7-5 against Karen Khachanov in a competition in which the baseline has dominated predictably.
The 33 -year -old victory won more than two hours and 38 minutes, made Dimitrov the fourth active player to count 100 Masters 1000 victories on the field harshly.
“It’s great. Last year, I think I won 100 victories inside, now that. It’s beautiful, I think that every time you take such a step,” said Dimitrov.
“We know ourselves very well, we train a lot, so there were not really secrets. In the end, this was summed up in a few points.”
Later Sunday, the fourth seeded Novak Djokovic is in action against Camilo Ugo Carabelli Argentin.
