It was another productive day in spring training for the Put, who are now within a week of the opening day after a 10-3 Victory eruption Above the nationals of Washington.
Before and after the match, manager Carlos Mendoza He enlightened some of the things that he and the rest of the coach staff see team players while the last alignment cuts begin to loom.
Rise
Max Kranick Perhaps was the most surprising launcher in the camp this year, because the 27-year-old dominated opposing strikers each time he was on the mound. This continued on Thursday evening when the right -hander withdrew two strikers from his two non -goal work sleeves, launching 19 throws and 11 strikes.
It was the third time that Kranick has launched two rounds so far during training in the spring, but the first time since February 27. In fact, in all outings except one of this year, Kranick has recorded more than three withdrawals, showing that he is capable of being a lifter of several sleeves which is of great value in a pendulum of modern statements with starters who were no longer invited to go deep into games.
"(Kranick’s) A guy who is a guy from several rounds," Said Mendoza. "… (he) attacked the striking area (Thursday), Slider was good, life on the quick ball, continues to launch strikes and that’s what you want a guy like that capable of making several sleeves."
The rise of Kranick as an enclosure arm of lifts was surprising because of his lack of experience as MLB and because he has not presented in the majors since 2022 as a member of the Pirates of Pittsburgh. Even then, he launched only five rounds that year before undergoing an operation by Tommy John.
Since then, Kranick has been appointed for assignment by the pirates in January 2024 and claimed derogations by the dishes a week later. And although he did not do the Spring training team (started the season on IL), Kranick launched a triple-a well with a 3.57 MPM (1.22 whip) in 63 rounds on 41 appearances.
With a quick bullet that can reach the upper 90s and a devastating cursor that he can also launch for strikes (a 11.1 -round walk), New York hopes that Kranick can be his secret weapon this year.
Luis Torrens – Good striker
With the injury to Francisco Alvarez The landing on Il to start the season, the dishes will start the year with Torrens as a starting receiver. Known more for his defense – in particular his launch arm – Torrens showed in New York that he was also capable of the bat. Although it is not necessary for a backup receiver to be an offensive juggernaut, Torrens will have to intensify as he did in 2024 while Alvarez is on the shelf.
Thursday, the 28 -year -old went 3 for 3 marble with a triple, three products produced and three points scored in the heart of the Mets range.
"He is a good striker. We saw flashes last year, especially when he came for the first time and had the opportunity to play," Said Mendoza. "It is a guy who can drive baseball, knows what launchers are trying to do in certain situations. He will have an opportunity here and as I said, he is a good player."
For his career, Torrens reduced .227 / .289 / .356 with 22 circuits in 850 AT-BAT. If New York can bring out of the torrens with a great defense before Alvarez returns, it should be good, especially with so much fireplace elsewhere in the programming.
Start -up rotation battle
The dishes have still not revealed their full starting rotation with a few places to win and three launchers – Tylor Megill,, Paul Blackbun And GRIFFIN CANNING – in the running for them.
The three launchers experienced solid moments during the camp and Mendoza is satisfied with the way they launch the ball, as well as the way they recover.
When asked if Megill has an interior track to list the opening day, the skipper would not tip his hand.
"He is in the mixture, he is in the conversation," Said Mendoza. "These three guys we are talking about, they launched the ball very well, Megill being one of them. And that is why this decision is not as simple as people think.
"YYou can plead in case of Megill, you can plead in favor of Blackburn, you can plead in favor of Griffin (preserved). All three launch the ball very well, they recover well, that’s why we want to wait here and see what we have."
Although he has the least experience in the majors of the three options, Megill has experience with New York, his beginnings with the dishes in 2021 and having variable successes. The right -hander looks good in the action of the grapefruit league, with a 3.86 MPM (Whip 1.03) with 13 sticks in the stick in 11.2 rounds in three departures.
It is canned, however, which was the most impressive in the camp with its 0.90 MPM (0.80 whip) and 16 stick withdraws in 10 sleeves so far. A former second round choice, Canning signed with the dishes on a one -year contract of $ 4.25 million during the offseason after spending five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels.
During his career, the 28-year-old has a 25-34 file with an MPM of 4.78 (1.33 whip).
