Slot’s frustration boils over as Liverpool fall to Manchester City
Liverpool left the Etihad with more than just defeat hanging over them. Arne Slot was visibly furious after his side’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City. His anger was not focused solely on the performance, but on what he perceived as refereeing inconsistency that shaped the decisive moments of the competition.

City recovered from Dominik Szoboszlai’s superb opener thanks to Bernardo Silva and an Erling Haaland penalty, securing a comeback that preserved their title quest. For Liverpool, however, the narrative of the match became inseparable from the controversy.
Refereeing decisions spark debate
Slot’s post-match assessment quickly turned to the officiating. The flashpoint came at 0-0 when Mohamed Salah appeared to be pushed away by Marc Guehi as he scored the goal. No red card followed. Later, Szoboszlai was dismissed for denying Haaland a clear chance to score in almost identical fashion.
Asked about the decisions, Slot replied: “When you asked me what decision, I thought: what do you mean… the disallowed goal at City (earlier in the season)? The penalty they got in the away game against us?”

“The clear red card (for the foul) on Mo Salah in the second half here? Or the penalty they got in the second half, or do you mean Szoboszlai’s decision (red card)?

“It’s only been two games, and those who follow Liverpool know how many decisions I can make in all the other games as well, all the big decisions that could have resulted in some situations in a 50-50.”
His frustration was rooted in a perceived inconsistency rather than the law itself.
“I can live with the fact – even if I don’t like it – that the referee follows the rules and Dominik fouls Haaland in this situation which is a clear shirt pull and he had scored on goal so he would have scored. It’s a red card.

“If you follow the rules and you have a clear jersey shot from Guehi on Salah, who for eight years has scored this (chance) 100 times out of 100.
“And it’s not a red card? Then my frustration is even greater… It’s the rule and following the rules is all I ask.”
The pressure in the title race intensifies
While Slot struggled with officials’ grievances, Pep Guardiola was firmly focused on the top of the Premier League. The victory kept Manchester City six points behind Arsenal, boosting confidence in the reigning champions’ camp.
Guardiola said: “Thirteen games, in my experience, is a lot of time.
“All we can do is breathe down Arsenal’s neck and (continue) to be there, try if they fall asleep, if they (make a mistake), to use it.

“I feel that improving (just) a little bit won’t be enough to compete with Arsenal but we still have room (to improve). We have to (play them) at home, of course we have to beat them.”
Team concerns ahead of Sunderland trip
Liverpool’s immediate challenge now turns to availability. Szoboszlai’s suspension removes a key midfield driver, while Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong are not expected to return for the trip to Sunderland.
For Slot, the evening encapsulated a wider tension throughout Liverpool’s season, fine margins, major consequences and a growing sense that crucial calls are going the wrong way at decisive moments.
