A few days after the University of Michigan fired its football coach, students and campus fans said they were surprised and disappointed, but not worried about the future of Michigan football.

Former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore was fired for cause on Wednesday, December 10 and arraigned in a Washtenaw County court with one charge of trespassing and two misdemeanors on Friday, December 12.

UM students Sadhu Rajesh and Sophia Bordin said they were in the middle of a study session when they saw the news on Instagram. They said they were shocked by the news and the situation as a whole.

“It’s just insane. I think he’s had a really good life. A wife and college football, it’s a huge deal, and I think he made a stupid decision,” Bordin said.

Rajesh said she wasn’t too worried about the football team. next pétanque match or next season because Moore has been head coach for less than two years. He has recruited some good talent, though, she said, and she worries about players entering the transfer portal.

“He was really good at it and now we don’t have that,” she said, adding that she also fears current players will leave.

Jack Gaffney was eating at the Michigan Union when he heard the news. He said his first reaction was “this is hard” and he felt bad.

“I was very surprised. I didn’t think Sherrone would go crazy like that, but I feel bad for everyone,” Gaffney said.

He said he and others he knows were surprised but not worried about the rest of the season or next year. When asked what he wanted to see from the program in the future, he said “a coach doesn’t sleep with a staff member.”

Recent graduate Christian Nunez said he was going to sleep and a friend texted him to tell him the surprising news.

“It’s just disappointing in general because (at) Michigan we pride ourselves on not only our excellence on the field but also off the field, so to hear that this is happening is just disappointing as a fan,” Nunez said.

Nunez said he hopes this situation doesn’t define the athletic department and added that the school and football program can move forward.

“It’s good to remember that our actions define us, and it’s easy to remember the bad deeds, but I think as Michigan we also do a lot of good deeds and we hold ourselves to high standards,” Nunez said. “It doesn’t happen all the time, but I like to believe that most of the time we hold ourselves to that high standard and we achieve it even if people don’t recognize it.”
