The Friday evening match of the Acadiana girls from the Acadiana against Southside was not only his ordinary district match. It was a night to remember two players who represent the legacy of the big ones who went through the Basketball Program for Girls of Rams.
Their evening inherited in 2024 was crowned with the retreat of two of the jerseys of their elders, Detrin White and Sheri Sam. No player will again return the number 55 after these two Acadiana legends.
“There is not, there is no type of recognition around the campus or even simply in the basketball community for these two players,” said the basketball coach of the girls of Acadiana, Jeremy Richardson. “I mean, everyone knows the heritage of Kim Perrot, she is like the gold stallion for basketball in Lafayette. But the more I turned into history, there were two other players without public recognition. »»
Richardson, who directed the event of the inherited evening, initially planned to remove the jersey from the late Kim Perrot – but his family was unable to do so. Sam was able to return to her old trampling land, where she was once the queen of the court.
More than a football school
Throughout their time to play for Acadiana, the two guards were fatal rebounders and even more dangerous defenders. Sam, who graduated in 1992, was the breakin ‘Rams Leader Bounder and Blocker before his career decorated in Vanderbilt. She was the third player in the History of the Commodore to be named Kodak All-American after having an average of 20.4 points per game as a senior.
In the WNBA, Sam just as successful, winning the WNBA championship in 2004 with the Seattle storm. She is also the best scorer of all time in Miami Sol now missing from the WNBA.
Once Sam left Acadiana, White resumed where she stopped. She would continue to be the new leader in rebounds and blocks during her stay as RAM before playing for LSU. White was a bucket on foot, on average a double-double in high school and almost the same for tigers. The former Acadiana 1998 also played in the WNBA being written by Indiana fever in 2002.
Honor the two large ones of the past adds not only to the curriculum vitae of Sam and White, but can help trigger a new generation of upcoming stars from Acadiana.
