Shanahan forcefully squashes trade rumors, wants to stay with 49ers originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Coach Kyle Shanahan is two seasons away from tying the legendary Bill Walsh (10 seasons) and one year away from tying Buck Shaw (nine seasons) as longest-tenured coach in 49ers history.
And he made it clear on Sunday that this is exactly what he hoped and expected would happen.
“I don’t want to be anywhere but here,” Shanahan said after the 49ers win 38-13 against Chicago Bears at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
“And my family feels just as strong, if not much stronger. You’re going to have to kick me out of here, so I can’t make that decision.
Shanahan’s future within the organization was a topic of conversation last week with the Chicago Bears in need of a new head coach.
THE Bears fire former coach Matt Eberflus after their Thanksgiving loss to the Detroit Lions. Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown is the interim head coach.
Some members of the media, including Mike Florio of Pro Football Talksuggested the Bears should approach the 49ers to acquire Shanahan in a trade.
general manager John Lynch called the speculation ‘comical’ during his weekly appearance on KNBR Friday.
Shanahan is widely considered one of the best coaches in the NFL and would certainly be an attractive option for many teams around the league if he becomes available.
Under Shanahan, the 49ers are 8-4 in the playoffs with four NFC Championship Game appearances and two Super Bowl appearances over the last five seasons.
The 49ers were 2-14 in 2016, the season before Shanahan and Lynch were hired. In their third season together, San Francisco won the NFC and advanced to the Super Bowl.
The 49ers’ win over the Bears on Sunday improved Shanahan’s regular season record to 70-58, which included nine straight losses to start his tenure.
Shanahan signed a multi-year extension with the 49ers at the start of the 2023 season, which is expected to keep him under contract with the organization through 2027.
