Late-night talk shows can be repetitive, but sometimes, magic happens. Recently, Seth Meyers’ show provided a heartwarming moment when he and Amy Poehler tackled an unexpected topic: Australian women’s football.
This is not their first foray into defending women’s sport. In 2015, they had already called Andy Benoit, then working for Sports Illustrated, completely rejected women’s soccer—and women’s sports, for that matter. While that opinion has curdled like warm milk, Poehler and Meyers’ comedic chemistry on behalf of women’s sports remains as strong as ever.
And if you didn’t have Meyers and Poehler talking about the Matildas’ goaltenders – Lydia Williams and Mackenzie Arnold – on your bingo card, we’re not sure anyone else did either.

“I cried today, I almost forgot to tell you,” Meyers said. “I watched a video, and it’s a connection to you being in Australia. The Australian goalkeeper for the women’s national team is retiring, and she gave the No. 1 jersey to someone who’s taking over.”
The video below is the one Meyers is referring to.

“I love the cheers in sports,” Poehler said.
Some people do, but probably not if you’re a Mets or New York Jets fan.
“When someone gets inducted into the Hall of Fame and they say, ‘My mom is the real MVP,’” she added. “Forget it.”
“Looking at someone – and I would say I liked an Australian because they never seem to cry,” Meyers said.
The two then proceeded to do some of the worst Australian accents you’ll ever hear, but that shouldn’t take away from how heartwarming, if slightly awkward, the moment was.
