The world number one Scottie Scheffler and Rory McILroy in Northern Ireland are in contact with leader Davis Thompson halfway from Genesis International in San Diego.
The American Scheffler struck a 67 under the age of five to lie behind Thompson, who sorted out the final hole while he signed for a 66 to give the pace on eight sous.
McILroy also pulled a 67, with five birdies in eight holes of the third moving him in the pines at Torrey Pines.
But the North Irish followed this with bogeys at 12 and 14 before taking shots in the 15th and 17. He could not take advantage of the 18th by five and is three shots from the head.
“I struck a lot of very good shots. Most of them played well. I rushed well,” said the 35 -year -old man.
“I just didn’t take advantage of the parameters. I caught up in other places, which was good. But I know that by spending the weekend, I will have to play the parameters better.”
Scheffler, who won last year’s masters, only reached five fairways on Friday and also knows that he will have to do better to challenge the weekend.
“I will certainly try to be a little more in the fairway,” he said.
“I felt that I had survived without very well driving the ball and I will have to lead it better in the last two days.”
Thompson, 25, won his first PGA Tour victory last year and had six birdies in his first 13 holes before dropping fire to his following two holes.
However, he recovered with a Birdie at 16, then a short -range putt to the last insured that he had finished upstairs.
The Genesis is generally held at the Riviera Country Club but was moved to Torrey Pines because of Los Angeles forest fires.
