When the two captains submit their range of singles for Sunday, they also provide a sealed envelope containing the name of a player.
The player named in the envelope would rest in simple if an opponent had to withdraw from the disease or injuries more than 30 minutes before the start of the first match in single.
The two players would be considered a pair, so each side would take half a point.
If a player withdrew less than 30 minutes before the start of the first match in single, his match is confiscated.
As soon as a team captain is informed of the disease or possible injuries to one of his players, they must immediately inform the opposing captain and chief referee.
The names of the envelopes are only revealed if they are used.
An additional envelope was used at the Ryder Cup 2021 in Whistling Straits in case a player had to withdraw after having tested positive for COVID-19.
Europe only needs 2½ points of the 12 single games to keep the Ryder Cup. If Hovland withdraws from his match, they would only need two points of the other 11.
