Bainbridge Rotary Club Hears 4-H About Sports Injuries

Thirty million children participate in organized sports each year and more than 3 million suffer injuries, according to Sybil Lee, junior and 4-H member at Grace Christian Academy (GCA).
Lee recounted this fact as part of a presentation on sports-related injuries she gave to the Bainbridge Rotary Club. She and her sidekick Herbet, a model skeleton, educated the room on three common sports injuries: shin splints, torn knee ligaments and concussions.
“Injuries are truly a part of sport,” Lee said in his presentation. “It’s always important to know the risks you’re taking, even if you’re just playing football in PE. »
Lee explained what each injury was, showed where they occur on the body – thanks, Herbert – and gave preventative measures athletes can take to avoid these illnesses in his presentation.
Lee created the presentation as part of the 4-H project. Project Achievement is a 4-H competition aimed at developing members’ public speaking skills. Members create a presentation lasting 5 to 12 minutes, depending on their age, on a chosen research topic.
“Project Achievement is the public speaking component of 4-H,” said Lindsey Hayes, Decatur County 4-H coordinator. “This helps 4-H members develop their oral and written communication skills, while giving them the opportunity to investigate or research a topic that interests them.
Lee chose sports injuries as her topic, and aside from her presentation research, she is familiar with these injuries through her own experience as an athlete. She was captain of the 2023 state runner-up GCA volleyball team and ran on the cross country team.
She and 10 other 4-H members will be traveling to Putnam County this weekend to compete in the district-level project competition. District-level winners will advance to the state competition and have the opportunity to be invited to the National 4-H Convention, a five-day event that engages school-aged 4-H members from across the country in the areas of leadership and citizenship. , global consciousness and inclusion.
