Czech Barbora Krejcikova completed her triumph in singles and doubles at Roland Garros on Sunday by lifting the women’s doubles trophy with compatriot Katerina Siniakova, beating Iga Swiatek and Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 6-2.
Krejcikova became the first player to win both the women’s singles and doubles titles in Paris since France’s Mary Pierce achieved the feat in 2000.
Krejcikova, 25, who will climb to 15th in singles after her first Grand Slam singles title on Saturday, will return as world number one in doubles when the rankings are updated on Monday.
Swiatek, the 2020 singles champion, and Mattek-Sands were playing in only their third tournament together and struggled to assert themselves against Siniakova’s nimble movements and deft net play and Krejcikova’s strong performance from the baseline.
The second-seeded Czech pair, who also won the 2018 Roland Garros title, raced out to an early 5-1 lead and although Swiatek and Mattek-Sands fought back to 5-4, they were unable to prevent Krejcikova from serving for the set.
On a windy day in sunny Paris, Siniakova continued to struggle with her serve and the Czech duo committed a total of eight double faults in the match. But the pair, who also won the Wimbledon doubles title in 2019, overcame their service problems with experience and excellent coordination.
The second seeds lost serve once in the second set but broke their opponents three times and sealed the victory when Siniakova hit a backhand winner on their second match point.
