Report: Warriors, Timberwolves talked about KAT trade before Knicks deal originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
The Warriors aimed to add a combination of size and shooting this offseason.
After pursuing All-Stars Paul George and Lauri Markkanen this summer, reportedly with the former intention to acquire both players, Golden State had its eyes on another big man in the Western Conference.
Before the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks finalized a stunning blockbuster trade earlier this month, the Warriors inquired about the availability of Karl-Anthony Towns, The Athletic reported. Anthony Slater reported Tuesdayciting sources, in his article on Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy.
“Over the past two months, the Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves have had a conversation about Karl Anthony-Towns, league sources said, but it has gone nowhere,” Slater wrote. “The Timberwolves targeted a specific New York Knicks package that the Warriors did not possess. There are no other obvious big names immediately available heading into the regular season.”
Minnesota ultimately traded Towns to New York for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, Keita Bates-Diop and a future first-round pick. The Charlotte Hornets, a third team involved in the trade, received Charlie Brown, DaQuan Jeffries, Duane Washington Jr., two future second-round picks, a 2025 second-round pick and cash considerations.
Although the Warriors weren’t able to land George, Markkanen or Towns, they can at least take solace in seeing two of the three leave the Western Conference… right?
