Report: 49ers strategically restructure Hargrave contract originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
While the 49ers are still fighting for a 2024 NFL playoff spot, the team is also focused on the 2025 season and beyond.
San Francisco has restructured the remaining two seasons of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Javon Hargrave’s contract, Over The Cap’s Jason Fitzgerald reported Tuesdayciting a league source.
The move would drop Hargrave’s 2025 salary cap hit from $28.1 million to $10.3 million, potentially opening the door to a release after June 1.
The previous cost of releasing Hargrave would have been $28.1 million if the June 1 designation had been used. After the restructuring, the 49ers can now cut Hargrave at a cost of only 10.3 million with a designation after June 1.
Hargrave initially signed a four-year contract, $81 million ahead of the 2023 NFL season, helping the 49ers reach Super Bowl LVIII, recording eight sacks in 19 appearances.
Unfortunately, Hargrave’s 2024 NFL season came to an abrupt end in Week 3, suffering from a triceps injury this has since sidelined the veteran defensive tackle.
