The New York Rangers haven’t given up on Matt Rempe yet.
Rempe was suspended for eight games for a hit he inflicted on Miro Heiskanen. He served five of eight matches.
Once his suspension is over, the Rangers could very well keep Rempe on the active roster instead of sending him to the American Hockey League.
“The good news is the Rangers love him almost as much as you love him,” said ESPN’s Emily Kaplan. “They still like his attitude, his work ethic, his development, so as long as he’s learned his lesson, I expect him to have another opportunity with the Rangers this spring.”
The 22-year-old forward has only appeared in five games for the Rangers this season as he has been bounced up and down the Hartford Wolf Pack.
He brings a certain physical spark that is certainly intriguing for a Rangers team that is struggling to find its identity and continues to slide in the Eastern Conference standings.
It’s unclear how Peter Laviolette will use Rempe moving forward, but expect him to carve out some sort of role for himself in New York.
