Purdy wants 49ers contract extension to happen quickly and quietly originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
FATHER CLARÉE — Brock Purdy heads towards his 49ers contract extension imminent negotiations with increased urgency following several reluctances and restraints from his teammates in 2024.
“For me, I obviously want to get this done, if it’s an opportunity to get it done quickly, that would be great,” Purdy said Monday. “Just so we can come back for Phase 1 and continue it with the receivers and our team, and continue to grow.
“Because we all have to grow together. We need to connect, learn and become the best versions of ourselves as quickly as possible. And I think about Phase 1, the OTAs, coming back, getting all the guys back and rolling and getting out of this offseason together. »
Purdy has one year remaining on his rookie contract and is scheduled to make $1.1 million during the 2025 NFL season. But he is now eligible for an extension and expected to sign a high-end deal.
Purdy and the 49ers entered the 2024 offseason with Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk not participating as they development of contract extensions. Not having the full squad on the field in preparation for the first week had an impact on the effectiveness of the team, which won only one of its first three games.
“Everyone’s timing is different,” Purdy said. “At the end of the day, I want to win and I want to win for the organization and for everyone here. I’m not the type of guy that wants anything dramatic associated with anything, I’m here for this organization, for my teammates in the locker room and I want to be very professional about it.
When asked for details on the next steps in the process, Purdy laughed a bit, reminding the assembled media that this was his first time negotiating a contract. He said meetings with some coaches were scheduled for later in the day, but beyond that he wasn’t sure.
One thing is certain: Purdy doesn’t want any of his negotiations to take place in the public spotlight.
“I want to keep it to the point and not get distracted by all the chaos that can happen,” Purdy said. “I want to be honest and respectable, do something and get back to work.”
With a roster filled with high-priced stars, the front office could offer a team-friendly deal to keep the group mostly intact, but Purdy said nothing has been discussed so far.
“We’ll see when we actually sit down to negotiate and discuss,” Purdy said. “More than anything, I want to be able to be there for my guys in the locker room. I want to be here in San Francisco and play my football career here. I love being here and I want to do whatever it takes to be here.
“I’m not really sure what it will look like and what it will entail, but I know I’m the guy in this organization and I can do what it takes to get us where we want to go and I am confident in this.
The 49ers’ 2024 season didn’t go as planned, including for Purdy and his performance on the field. He completed 300 of 455 attempts for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions after leading the NFL in several categories in 2023.
In his second season, the quarterback arrived fourth place in MVP voting after making a similar 308 of 444 attempts. But he threw for more yards (4,280) and more touchdowns (31) while being intercepted fewer times (11).
“More than anything, looking back over the last couple of years, I just want to grow,” Purdy said. “I want to be a better quarterback and I want to be here with these guys and I want to win here.
“Whatever happens from a business perspective, everything will fall into place as it should. I want to represent this organization, my teammates, myself, the right way throughout this process and help this organization win.
