However, the Presidio Golf Course staff did not appreciate our interest in this critically important constituency of golf voters. An employee threw the Standard off the green almost immediately. We returned there 30 minutes later.
The topic of golf skills came up during Thursday’s CNN debate, when Trump was asked about his fitness. The former Republican president and convicted felon boasted that he was in “really good shape” and had recently won two championships on one of his golf courses. “To do that, you have to be pretty smart and you have to be able to hit the ball really far,” Trump said.
Trump said Biden “can’t hit a ball 50 yards.”
Biden then touted his own golfing abilities. “I lowered my handicap to six when I was vice president,” Biden said. He challenged Trump to a golf match again, but only if Trump carried his own bag of clubs.
“Do you think you can do it?” asked Biden, whose handicap is listed on the United States Golf Association website as 6.7, last updated in July 2018. Trump’s handicap, last updated in June 2021, is listed as 2.5. Biden would be 86 at the end of his second term, while Trump would be 82 if he serves a four-year term. For those who don’t know, the lower the number, the better the handicap when it comes to golf.
For some on the course Friday, their alleged disabilities could be just another example of a campaign that’s hard to believe.
“Six? He can barely count to six,” Irishman John Walsh, 25, said of Biden’s disability.
Connor Jolibois, 32, said they should both be concerned about another type of disability.
“I would say that when it comes to disabilities, the medical issues are probably more pressing,” Jolibois said.
“This probably wasn’t the right platform to debate their golf handicaps,” said Chris Morris, a pro shop employee. “But if they’re legitimate handicaps, they’re both very good golfers.”
