South Yorkshire Police are investigating the death of Nottingham Panthers star Adam Johnson after his throat was cut by an ice skater.

Johnson, 29, was playing for the Nottingham Panthers against the Sheffield Steelers at the Utilita Arena when he collided with an opponent and suffered a gash to his neck. Although he was quickly treated by paramedics, he was later pronounced dead at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.
South Yorkshire Police said: “Since Saturday, detectives have carried out a series of investigations, including examining footage, speaking to witnesses and seeking the advice and support of highly specialized experts to try to understand the circumstances surrounding this that happened.
“We have also worked closely with Sheffield City Council’s health and safety department, who are supporting our investigation.”
A statement from the Panthers on Sunday read: “The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident during the Sheffield match last night.
“The Panthers would like to pass on our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner and all his friends at this extremely difficult time. Everyone at the club including players, staff, management and owners , is heartbroken at the news of Adam’s death.
“Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, particularly those who attended or followed the match, who will be devastated by today’s news. The Panthers would like to thank everyone who rushed to support Adam last night in the most trying of circumstances.
“Adam, our number 47, was not only an exceptional ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him. The Club will greatly miss him and will never forget him. We ask for life deprived of Adam’s family and friends, and everyone at the club is respected during these difficult times as we all seek to come to terms with our grief. Rest in peace Adam.”
The ice hockey community was shaken by Johnson’s death, with all games suspended on Sunday. The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) has decided to introduce new laws making it compulsory for players to wear neck guards from 2024.
The EIHA said in a statement: “It is unacceptable for a player to lose their life while playing sport. Our responsibility is not only to avoid a repeat of such a heartbreaking accident, but also to treat prevention of other foreseeable incidents in the future.
“We have both a legal and moral obligation to respond in a measured and pragmatic manner. It is very likely that comprehensive evaluations will take place at the international level, and the EIHA is committed to playing an active and constructive role in this process. “
