South Yorkshire Police have confirmed a man has been released on bail after being arrested for manslaughter following the ice hockey star’s tragic death. Adam Johnsonaged only 29 years old.

Johnson died after his throat was slashed by an opposing player’s skate during the Nottingham Panthers’ match against the Sheffield Steelers at Steel City on October 28 last year.

A man was arrested on November 14 and later released on bail. He has now been released on bail until April 25.

Police said in a statement: “A man who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson in Sheffield has been released on bail.

“Adam, 29, was seriously injured during a match between the Sheffield Steelers and the Nottingham Panthers on October 28.

“He was sadly pronounced dead in hospital. A post-mortem confirmed he died from a neck injury.

“On November 14, a man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and later released on bail. Today he was released until April 25, 2024.”

Johnson died after an on-ice collision in which an opposing player’s skate went airborne, fatally cutting the 29-year-old’s throat.

Around 8,000 spectators were present at the Sheffield Arena when the incident took place. Johnson was rushed to nearby Northern General Hospital after doctors gave him emergency treatment while he was shielded by players, but could not be saved.

An inquest into his death learned how Johnson’s fiancee, Ryan Wolfe, identified his body. She posted on Instagram : “My sweet, sweet angel. I will miss you forever and I will always love you.”

Johnson was buried in his hometown from Hibbing, Minnesota. His family honored Johnson with a moving obituary. They said: “Adam loved the outdoors and the simple things in life. He enjoyed working in the garden, fishing, playing golf with friends, participating in the Iron Ice hockey tournament, doing projects around the house, reading , follow the stock market and listen to your favorite music.

“Adam particularly enjoyed his quiet time over coffee with his fiancée Ryan, dreaming about their future and spending the morning together.

“Adam enjoyed living a slower life and took pleasure in the small things of everyday life. The simple pleasures Adam enjoyed were grinding his coffee beans by hand, seeing the colors of each sunset, sitting by the lake by a bonfire with a glass of his favorite red wine, and trying new dinner recipes. But more than anything, he loved the Costco steak deals.

“He meant many things to many people, but to those who were lucky enough to be loved by Adam, they knew he was caring, patient and truly genuine. Above all, he loved his fiancée, his family and his friends. We will forever miss his loving and calm demeanor.”
