The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that they have recalled forwards Matt Nieto and Vasily Ponomarev from their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. They also sent goalie Joel Blomqvist to the AHL.
Blomqvist made eight starts for Pittsburgh this season and largely played well, going 3-5 with a 0.904 SV% and 3.60 GAA.
The 22-year-old posted a 25-12-6 record with a 0.921 SV% and 2.16 GAA with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season. He was named to the AHL All-Star Team, AHL All-Star Game and AHL Second All-Star Team.
With Alex Nedeljkovic and Tristan Jarry returning to the NHL, the move will give Blomqvist the opportunity to start games.
Nieto has scored one goal in two games with WBS this season. He had four points in 22 games with Pittsburgh last season.
Ponomarev has one assist in five AHL games this season. He split his time between four teams last season. He played in two career NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes and scored one goal and added one assist.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is currently 8-3-1 and has only allowed 29 goals in 12 games. Their next game is November 16 against the Bridgeport Islanders.
