Manchester City ended in a 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16. Pep Guardiola’s side were eliminated from the competition with a 5-1 aggregate defeat over the two matches. Last night’s game saw City play over 70 minutes with ten men after Bernardo Silva was sent off for a deliberate goal-line handball to prevent a Vinicius Junior shot. Vinicius Junior converted the ensuing penalty and gave Real Madrid a 4-0 aggregate lead. From that point on, City had every reason to capitulate to an embarrassing defeat. Instead, Pep Guardiola’s side pushed hard and fought last night until the final whistle.

Manchester City’s performance last night showed that Pep Guardiola has firmly established a key element in his new team. Team spirit is strong in this City team, and once established, it will form the backbone going forward for Manchester City.

Manchester City showed that the spirit and character of this team are strong.

Once Bernardo Silva was sent off and Vinicius Junior gave Real Madrid a 4-0 aggregate lead at the Etihad Stadium last night, Manchester City were faced with it. Instead of feeling sorry for themselves, each player on the field went above and beyond for the cause. City pushed forward and defended for their lives when necessary, trying to get back into equality. Erling Haaland equalized in the 41st minute to make it 1-1 and give themselves hope of the tie.

In the second half, City had enough chances to make it 2-1 on the night. Jeremy Doku and Rayan Ait-Nouri had goals ruled out for offside and many good chances were wasted. When Vinicius Junior scored Real Madrid’s winner in the 93rd minute, it seemed like a major blow for Manchester City. Despite last night’s defeat, Pep Guardiola’s side showed that their team spirit and character were strong.

All Manchester City players fought for this cause last night. They fought for every ball and got up and down the field when necessary. They all left everything on the pitch and their performance showed that Pep Guardiola has established the right team spirit in his team. This will take this City team a long way as the next stages of their evolution begin.

Pep Guardiola is excited about his team’s future.

Speaking after his team’s exit from the Champions League Last night, Pep Guardiola said he was excited about the future of this Manchester City team. He explained: โ€œThey always showed (incredible spirit). It’s hard (to be) down 3-0 then 4-0 at 10 against 11, it’s almost impossible.ยป

“When I analyze the match I like the way we started and played, I would love to play 11 against 11 but in football these circumstances happen. Madrid are an extraordinary team and punish you when you make a mistake. The future looks bright and we will be back next season. We will learn.ยป

Pep Guardiola added that City have several players who have now experienced the Champions League and should be in a better position for next season and beyond. He added: โ€œNext season, I don’t know what will happen but of course Khusanov, Cherki, Semenyo, it’s the first time they are playing in the Champions League. This may take time. I see a lot of good players and a lot of good things.ยป

Manchester City fought for their lives in difficult circumstances last night against Real Madrid. In doing so, they showed that Pep Guardiola had firmly established the necessary team spirit in his team. This is and will be a vital ingredient to Manchester City’s future success, and while this City team still needs to mature, they will do so with a strong team spirit and the necessary character within their ranks to thrive.
