New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye left Sunday’s game against the New York Jets with a head injury.
The Patriots listed him as questionable for return before halftime. Maye was injured following a hit to the head in the second quarter. Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood chased down Maye on a run and made helmet-to-helmet contact on a hit from behind as Maye slid.
The hit did not trigger a penalty flag.
Maye went to the sideline medical tent after the hit, then to the Patriots locker room. Jacoby Brissett took over at quarterback on New England’s next possession.
Maye completed 3 of 6 passes for 23 yards and ran for 46 yards and a touchdown before his injury. The Patriots held a 7-6 lead when he left the game.
Maye was the No. 3 pick in North Carolina’s April draft and started the season behind Brissett on the depth chart. The Patriots won their first game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but fell to 1-4 with Brissett as the starting quarterback. Maye took over the quarterback position and made his first NFL start in Week 6 against the Houston Texans.
In two starts and one relief appearance before Sunday’s game against the Jets, Maye had completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 7.1 yards per attempt with five touchdowns and two interceptions. He added 68 yards rushing on 10 carries.
