New Oklahoma Sooners The quarter-back leaving John Mateer had many expectations on his shoulders before his first season in Norman. The fourth year chief coach of L’E, Brent Venables, brought Mateer and his offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle in Oklahoma to repair an offense that was one of the worst university football last season.
Mateer spoke to the media For the first time as earlier on Wednesday and explained his state of mind in his new team.
“People say I have a swag,” said Mateer. “I just play football. I have the ball in my hand at each game, I have the opportunity to do something with it, this camera is on me all the time, so I suppose that I have swag. Some people say that I have tenacity. I just have the impression of having the obligation to give everything I have for my teammates.”
Oklahoma has generally had one of the best quarters of all university football under the center on a basis from year to year. But this reputation took a safe hit last season, and the Sooners fell to 6-7.
Now, in a pivotal season for Venables and the whole program, it is a Mateer who will have to produce at a very high level while the Sooners try to bounce back in their second year in the dry.
