We now know the room. We know the answer. We know the agony of “NOLA’s no-call.”
But here, at NFL owners’ meetings, the real challenge arises: solving the problem.
Here’s what we know. Seven teams proposed instant replay changes. Neither team was the Saints. Frankly, they didn’t have to. Other teams don’t want to experience what the Saints just did in the NFC Championship Game.
The competition committee, which includes Sean Payton, presented two other proposals. One would be to allow review of pass interference penalties. The other would be to allow review of pass interference, roughing the passer and hitting a defenseless player.
But here’s the kicker – only if a flag was thrown.
This is where things have always been a gray area in the Saints situation. Opening up the possibility of challenging a non-call was never really an option. Additionally, there appears to be little momentum for an eighth official or sky judge.
It’s possible that significant changes to instant replay could come this week, but it appears that it would have no impact on the game, likely costing the Saints a chance at the Super Bowl.
